Why your city or town matters
Being inside a city’s limits changes who governs you day to day. A municipality runs its own police and fire, sets zoning and building codes, passes local ordinances (from parking to noise), often levies a city tax or utility fee, and holds mayoral and council elections you can vote in. Step across the city line into unincorporated land and most of that shifts to the county instead — so which side of the boundary you’re on is the difference between two different local governments.
City, town, or unincorporated — they’re not the same
Not every address is inside a city. An incorporated place — a city, town, village, or borough — is a municipality with its own government. A census-designated place (CDP) is an unincorporated community the Census names for statistics but which has no municipal government. And large stretches of the country are unincorporated — governed directly by the county, with no city or town at all. This tool tells you which of the three you’re standing in, rather than forcing a nearby city name onto a spot that isn’t in one.
Common questions
Why does it say I’m in an unincorporated area?
Because your location isn’t inside any incorporated city or town. Many Americans live in unincorporated territory governed directly by the county rather than any municipality. Your mailing address may still show a nearby city as its post-office name, but that isn’t the same as being in that city.
Why is my mailing city different from this?
The city on your mail is the USPS post-office name for your ZIP, which often covers addresses outside that city’s actual limits. This tool reports the municipal boundary you physically sit in — which can differ.
What’s a census-designated place?
A CDP is a populated community the Census Bureau outlines for data purposes — like a recognizable neighborhood or town — that has not been incorporated as a municipality. It has a name and boundary but no city government.
